QueerCuts: Karen and the Sorrows
I’m officially on a covers tear these days. From having a facebook post about covers that blew up to over 1,000 comments, to working on a campfire covers album – it seems like all I can think about are covers. Which leads me to today’s epic Queer Cuts artist.
Karen and the Sorrows are one of the icons of the Queer Country movement. She runs the Gay Ole Opry Festival in Brooklyn, she is one of TheBoot.com’s 10 Queer Country Artists to listen to, and the band was described by Rolling Stone Country as “for fans of Dolly Parton fronting Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers.” If you haven’t heard her – well head to the video below and get a first taste of your new favorite band. Gifted with a gorgeously light and powerful voice – Karen has been making audiences dance and swoon in the NYC area and beyond for years.
Today – as Stevie Nicks just announced that she is going to be a part of the next season of American Horror Story – it seems quite appropriate to share this absolute gem with you. Karen and the Sorrows covering the hit ‘Stand Back’ at the iconic NIGHT OF 1000 STEVIES 27 – the largest Stevie Nicks fan event in the world.
More about Karen and the Sorrows
Queer country trailblazers Karen & the Sorrows have been featured in Billboard, WNYC’s The Takeaway, and Rolling Stone, who described them as “Dolly Parton fronting Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers.” Noisey called their most recent album, The Narrow Place, “exactly what country music needs right now.” They are also at the heart of Brooklyn’s queer country scene, running the Gay Ole Opry Festival and the Queer Country Quarterly, and creating community for people who love country music even if country music doesn’t always love them back.
