Mariya Stokes the Fire on New Single “Break My Heart”

Hot. Damn.

“Break My Heart,” the new single from Canadian country-soul queen Mariya Stokes, might just set your speakers on fire. Kicking off with a downright naughty wah-wah guitar over a fuzzed-out bass riff, “Break My Heart” tells the age-old tale of falling deeply in lust with a perfect stranger – emphasis on perfect.

(Full disclosure: it’s an opposite-sex lust, but we happen to know that Mariya is family. Sometimes lust is lust.)

Written by Stokes with Aaron Pollock and produced by Juno Award-winners (Canadian Grammys) Spencer Cheyne and Justin Kudding, the track radiates an irresistible swagger reminiscent of feminist country firebrands like Maren Morris.

Stokes says of the song, “’Break My Heart’ is a challenge. It’s about having the confidence to be straight up and tell someone that you’re into them. I’ve heard a ton of country songs about men being interested in women at the bar; this song is like that, but with gender roles reversed. It’s a playful little dare, and I hope you feel empowered and confident when you’re jamming out to it.”
